How are Pallets Graded?
When purchasing used wood pallets you will need to understand how they are graded to make sure you receive the appropriate pallets for your needs. There are three ways that used wood pallets can be graded which are A, B, and C.
Grade A: An A grade pallet is one that is in very good condition. These pallets will have few if any signs of wear and tear and will typically be made of hardwood. These pallets are the most expensive but will also last the longest. Softwood pallets can also fall in the A grade area if they are square and don’t have any warped or split stringers.
Grade B: A B grade pallet is one that is in good condition with some signs of wear and tear. These pallets are typically made of softwood and while they may not last as long as an A grade pallet, they are a more cost effective option.
Grade C:: A C grade pallet is one that is in poor condition with significant signs of wear and tear. Most common problems with C grade are cracked, warped or missing stringers. These pallets are typically made of softwood and will need to be replaced more often than A or B grade pallets. However, they are the most cost effective option for those on a budget.
NOTE: Unless if a customer specifically asks for a C grade shipment, AZ Pallet Services generally repairs these to a Grade A or B status. On pallets we deem irreparable we break them down and sell material to hobbyists etc. or we process the lumber into wood shavings for animal bedding.
In short, A grade pallets will last the longest but are also the most expensive. B and C grade pallets are more cost effective but will need to be replaced more often. Regardless, when compared to new, used recycled pallets will save your company a lot of money over time. Choose the right grade of pallet for your needs to ensure that you are getting the most bang for your buck.
